Mustard Seed was born in 1990. At that time the 'new creation' retreat team was operated by the Christian Brothers. At the end of that year, when the brothers decided to withdraw from school retreats, many schools were left with tentative bookings which could not be fulfilled. 3 members of the team agreed to try to run the team for a year.
The 2009/10 school year marks the 20th year of the team.
Many who worked with the team have gone on to careers in education, with CYC, with the School Completion Programme, in Parish Work, and even as a Diocesan Youth Director.
From such small seeds do great things grow.
Our Logo (see the animated version on the left) takes its inspiration not only from the parable of the mustard seed (Mark 4:30), but also from 1 Corinthians 3:7-8. One sows another waters, etc.
Young people's needs and spiritual experiences have really changed over the last 20 years. We find a very different level of spirituality among the 21st century teenager than we found in the 90s. The search, however remains the same. There is a hunger for a spiritual element to life, a hunger for a relationship with God. This desire is as powerful today as it ever was; all that has changed is that the search route is a bit different.
